Dentures are an age old method of replacing missing teeth. Dentures are essentially removable teeth which are used by lots of people around the world. However dentures have their own disadvantages. They can tend to be uncomfortable and cause soreness in the mouth. Dentures also suffer from not being a good fit on the jaw. Due to this they may make eating and speaking a problem.

However with implant dentistry this need not be a problem anymore. With implant dentistry one can support the dentures in the mouth making them more stable and secure. These implant supported dentures can be removed also. What is done is that metal frames are implanted into the jawbones and allowed to heal over some months and fuse with the bone. For a full denture, about 3-4 implants are needed per jaw but partial denture implants can also be done. With the implants there can be bar attachments or ball attachments. Ball attachments are preferable as less are required per denture as compared to bar attachment.

While these metal implants keep the dentures in place they also tend to increase the treatment time by at least 3 months. This is to allow the implanted metal to heal correctly and fuse properly to take the weight and pressure of the dentures. On the whole implant dentures are becoming popular and help wearing dentures easier for people.
