Hormones Can Cause Headaches

Headaches can be very distressing. They are a common symptom and many headaches are self-limiting anddo not represent anything too serious.

Many headaches have easily identifiable symptoms. These often fall into a pattern which can aid or point to the diagnosis. If you see a doctor her or she will take a full history including details of past problems, injuries, eye problems, sinus problems, dental difficulties, problems with the jaw, and the use of treatments. There may be a whole host of other things that your doctor will want to discuss with you.

Changes in hormone levels especially in women can be associated with new or increased headache symptoms. Migraine headaches immediately before, during, or a few days following menstruation is not that uncommon for some women. Even ovulation can cause headache symptoms in some people. Likewise, some hormone medication (such as the contraceptive pill) can cause headaches. If you suspect any of these then consult your physician

Although headaches are not serious in the vast majority of cases, you should be aware of the symptoms and their associations and seek advice and help from your doctor if you are unsure about the nature of your pain or if anything unusual or worrying develops.

What can the sufferer do?

Take control of your headaches

Follow the agreed treatment plan

Take medications as directed by the doctor.

Be prepared - carry medications with you.

Try and see if there is a pattern - change lifestyle accordingly

Monitor lifestyle - look at diet, exercise, rest, and stress
Contact your doctor is there are changes or warning signs

For example: Change in frequency or severity, change in type of headache, side effects to any medications, new or recurring health conditions, you are pregnant, any unexplained or worrying medical problems.
