It may not burn your eyes, your skin may feel softer, and your hair will not turn green. Although
it would seems that a salt-water pool system would be a natural way to go that might not necessarily
be the case. The chemical name for the salt used in salt-water pools is sodium chloride. Sodium
chloride is the raw ingredient used in making chlorine. The only difference is that the salt-water
pool makes the chlorine itself with a salt-water chlorinator instead of you buying the chlorine and
adding it yourself.
Aside from the chemical aspect of a salt-water pool still being an
issue, the salt-water chlorinator has issues of its own. It is necessary for the salt-water pool
chlorinator to run for a good amount to time to produce enough chlorine to keep the water at a
stable balance. With the presence of phosphates in the water, the chlorinator can overwork and make
a reserve of chlorine in the water. The amount of salt in the water has to maintain the correct
levels or the chlorinator will not work. People often think that because a salt-water chlorinator
produces its own chlorine that you do not have to test the water weekly. This is not the case. You
must test the waters to make sure there is a Ph balance within the reasonable standards or your
chlorine will not be as effective as it should be.
Other common issues that a salt-water
pool has are that the salt can crystallize and clog or damage the filter. It has also been found
that in large pools that the salt-water chlorinator cannot keep up in the hotter weather. The water
from the salt-water pool is not good for plant life or grass around the pool. It may be better than
a chlorinated pool but the salt level are too high and can kill the grass and plant life. It has
also been said that salt water pools attract bees and other bugs to the area.
Chlorine,
used to treat salt water pools, has been linked to possible asthma incidents. Inhaling chlorine
fumes into your lungs is dangerous and can be painful. Studies involving chlorine have also linked
it to bladder and rectal cancers, as well as heart disease.
For help in maintaining your
salt pool, you will need to work only with dealers that sell salt water units. If your pool supplier
only works with chlorine pools they may not have the right experience or equipment to help you
properly maintain your pool.
Salt water pools cleaned with chlorine are subject to
temperature changes, exposure to sunshine and rain, and the more swimmers in the pool, the shorter
period of time it remains clean. You have to constantly adjust the pH level in pool water for the
salt and chlorine to be effective. Chlorine can also produce a smell that isn't natural to a
swimming pool.
