Have you ever had a person bid on your eBay auction and decide they are not going to pay for the item after they won? You know the type of people who after you send an invoice decided they no longer want the item. They do not reply to any of your attempts to communicate with them. The type you never hear from again. The non paying bidder / buyer....Guess what!

You no longer just have to sit back and take it. You can fight back.

I recently saw a video how an eBay sell took a non paying buyer to small claims court, AKA The Peoples Court. The seller states he placed an item up on eBay's auction site and the buyer decided not to pay for the item. The seller placed within his auction description that he had "some pieces", not all pieces or even an amount of pieces. The buyer assumed "some pieces" meant he had more than what the seller had. So the buyer decided not to pay for the item due to the seller not having what he assumed the seller had. So the seller fought back and took him to court.

After watching this video I started to think about what steps I take when a buyer refuses to pay. I mean after I have tried to resolve the issue by communicating with them and still getting no reply. Here is what I do:

  • Put them on my "Blocking bidders and buyers" list. This makes sure they will not be able to bid on any of my other auctions. This way I no longer will have to deal with them again. Why would I want to go through the hassle again.
  • File an Unpaid Item Dispute for the transaction. This is something like a police report for eBay. They take down the facts and try to get both parties to come to a resolution. If a resolution can not be made, they intervene and make a decision. If you win the dispute eBay refunds my final value fee and the buyer gets a strike on their account.

I rarely get non paying bidders / buyers since I try to place as much information within my auction description. I try not to be vague about any issues or damages to the item. I am very specific about the condition, year, what is included, etc. This will resolve many issues before they even start.

Remember if you ever get involved with a non paying buyer / bidder you can fight back. Make sure to do the two steps above so you can cover yourself. If you feel you need to take it even further, you can always take them to small claims court.
